HOPE GATE is about empowering people living with and affected
by HIV, especially those in minority ethnic communities, to deal with the
difficulties of coping with HIV: physical, medical, psychological, social,
etc.
As well as the physical difficulties of coping with HIV and its not so easy
treatment, people with HIV, especially those from minority communities in
the UK, have significant ongoing difficulties in the areas of stigma and social
exclusion, income, immigration status, housing and living conditions, access
to training, skills and job opportunities. These are sometimes compounded
by serious mental and psychological difficulties associated with anxiety and
depression, their self-confidence and their personal relationships. Without
proper advice, information and support these difficulties will clearly lead
to reduced quality of life and may have a negative impact on one’s ability
to fully benefit from the remarkable medical advances in HIV treatment and
care and on efforts in preventing further transmission of HIV to others.
People with HIV, and especially those from minority ethnic communities, have
to be empowered to overcome these difficulties and fulfil their potential. We
are the gate to that empowerment.
